Co-chairman of HOK. Obata's design credits included the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC; King Saud University and King Khaled International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Tokyo Telecom Center in Tokyo, Japan; Northwestern Replacement Hospital in Chicago, Illinois; the adaptive re-use renovation of St. Louis Union Station; and headquarters for U.S. corporations such as B.P. America, Burger King Corporation, Kellogg Company, Levi Strauss & Co. and Mobil. Organizations citing Obata for his designs include the AIA, the Urban Land Institute and the General Services Administration. Obata received a bachelor's degree in architecture in 1945 from Washington University in St. Louis, and a Master's degree in architecture and urban design in 1946 from the Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he studies under the master Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen. In 1990, Obata was awarded an Honorary Ph.D. from Washington University and in 1991, an Honorary Ph.D. from the University of Missouri at St. Louis.
