When modernising its production line in 1998, the Union brewery acquired a new warehouse. An enormous building with bare concrete walls was thus realised along one of Ljubljana's main roads. In order to alleviate the impression of the rough, heavy concrete, the architect opted for its opposite - a light glass membrane. With its precise, almost fragile, details the facade introduces a new type of elegance to this part of the city. The glass panes are covered with thin decorative vertical strips, which appease the horizontal composition of the panes. The panes are fixed by means of special anchors, enabling them to overlap. The architect thus not only avoided the otherwise common bearing frames, but also created the more three-dimensional structure of the facade. The panes are almost like scales, while the anchoring elements work very well as ornamentation. In the evening, the glass membrane also functions as a kind of „canvas“ for the projection of an artistic „light show“.
