One of the most beautiful relics of Baroque architecture, the dwelling-house built by bishop István Dubniczay stands in the middle of the castle of Veszprém. Arranged in U shape, the main building and the subsidiary buildings enclose a courtyard which imparts an atmosphere of intimacy. Its present state records traces of several periods of construction. The reconstruction recently undertaken brings out the architectural shape which emerged in the late 20th century. The two space walls of the courtyard are made symmetrical through the storey added to the northern wing. which links the rooms on the ground floor. A new brick building was erected in the place where the additional building once stood at the southern end. Enclosing a loft, the roof was planned on the basis of Baroque examples in accordance with the original shape of the roof structure of the main building, which, fortunately, was not lost beyond recovery. Under a recent decision by the local authorities, the building houses a brick collection as well as the Károly László Collection, which is to be found in the storey added to the northern wing and in the loft. The rooms in which the bricks are shown are in the cellars, in the one-time grain store and in the new building. Brick is at once the material and the thematic focus of the museum. Built with open grouts, the walls look like stone surfaces thanks to the special laying technique applied in them. Péter Klobusovszki
